Zenit St. Petersburg defender, Nicolas Lombaerts, has urged his teammates to put up a memorable performance against the league leaders, CSKA Moscow, to claim maximum points in their upcoming match at Luzhniki Stadium.
Lombaerts revealed that the Bomzhi cannot afford to lose any more points after a disappointed first half of the season in the Russian Premier League. The defender has identified this tie as an opportunity for Zenit to decrease the point’s difference from
the Moscow-based club.
The former KAA Gent stopper highlighted that the Meshki would try their level best to earn a point away from home, if not a victory.
“If we win, then the gap will be reduced to two points, if lose, the difference would be eight points. Thus, we cannot afford to lose. We must either conquer, or at the very least seek a draw.” The Russian defender was quoted as saying.
The UEFA Cup winning defender heaped praise on the Army-Men by revealing that they are a strong team and have an excellent chance to extend their lead over Zenit. The Koni were held in their previous league meeting against FC Krasnodar.
Lombaerts is delighted to claim three points against Spartak Nalchik and admitted that the Russian club is moving in the right direction under Luciano Spalletti. Zenit managed to win their previous match against Spartacus by scoring the only goal of the
match.
“The mood is great, because we won and it is most important. Yes, anyone can criticize us for the worst second half, but it happens. The main thing is that we are getting close to CSKA.” The Russian Cup winner concluded.
The Russian defender was sidelined after sustaining a knee injury which required treatment in Germany. The star defender is now fit again and ready to fight for his place in the starting line-up against CSKA Moscow.
“Re-examination in Munich showed that I am alright. I am feeling no pain at the moment but decided to play it safe and I'm fully prepared for the match against CSKA Moscow.” The 26-year-old said.
