Zenit St. Petersburg recorded their second defeat of the ongoing UEFA Champions League campaign against AC Milan at Petrovsky stadium after suffering opening day 3-0 defeat against Malaga CF at Stadion La Rosaleda.
The Meshki managed to score an equalizer after conceding two early goals in the match, Tomas Hubocan spoiled the Russian party by putting the ball into his own net late in the game.
The fact that the St. Petersburg club has conceded 6 goals in the cup competition so far disappoints Luciano Spalletti, who has urged the defending Russian Premier League champions to improve defensively.
The defensive woes continued as the struggling Russian outfit failed to extend their 16-match home unbeaten streak in Europe by losing against the Italian giants. Nicolas Lombaerts and Domenico Criscito were the major absentees
in the European fixture.
Spalletti decided not to use the aforementioned defenders after the duo failed to recover in time ahead of the match. However, the former AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 coach has hinted at their comeback sooner rather than later.
“Both are doing well, their injuries are not aggravated. With regard to their availability, we will appreciate if they make them available fitness wise in the coming days. Until then we will use other member of the squad.” The
Russian Cup winner was quoted as saying.
And while Zenit remains at the bottom-spot on their respective group table until now, the Italian tactician still believes that they can defy all odds to progress to the later stages of the competition.
“We have found ourselves in a difficult situation, but I believe we can progress from the group stages of the tournament. For me it is a very sad night. Such matches left their marks for a long time. We need to be smarter because
this tournament demands consistency.” He concluded.
Spalletti went on to admit that the Rossoneri tested their first-team goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vyacheslav-Malafeev-c36502, for majority of the game probably because of the defensive errors made by the back four.
