Zenit St. Petersburg face a difficult task to qualify for the knock-out round of the UEFA Champions League after suffering their third defeat in the group stage match against Anderlecht at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on Wednesday.
It looked like the defending Russian Premier League champions have overcome their defensive problems in the tournament after winning against the Belgian champions at Petrovsky stadium previously.
But Luciano Spalletti’s men have now ended any lingering anxieties for their progression in the European tournament after losing another the group stage game prior to their earlier sufferings against Malaga and AC Milan respectively.
As things stand, the St. Petersburg club faces an uphill struggle to qualify for the UEFA Europa League after being dropped down to the bottom spot on their respective European group table.
However, Zenit’s new signing http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Axel-Witsel-c7029 is not ready to accept that his side has failed to meet the expectations in the tournament, saying that they still have a little chance to progress from the group stages.
Witsel, who joined the Russian outfit from Benfica during the summer transfer window, revealed that they have to win the remaining matches of the competition if they are to prove their critics wrong.
“If you consider our second half performance, we tried to control the ball more intelligently. But I think we needed to attack and failed. And I think we still have a chance if we win both the remaining games.”
“The home game was more difficult than today. I think we should have won it. Zenit have been playing at a good level all through the tournament but unfortunately we lacked enough luck in the games.” The Belgian Super Cup winner
was quoted as saying.
Commenting on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-c10193 Miguel, Witsel admitted that it was a joy to play alongside the Portuguese attacking midfielder. Danny returned to first-team action after recovering from a knee injury.
Zenit will not travel to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 to lock horns with Milan-based club before hosting Malaga at home.
