The Soviet Cup winner backs Zenit St. Petersburg to win the Russian Premier League this season and commented on Guus Hiddink’s appointment at Anzhi Makhachkala.
The former Dynamo Moscow player, Aleksandr Bubnov, has ruled out Zenit St. Petersburg from winning the UEFA Champions League this season by admitting that the Russian outfit does not have a decent squad to accomplish the nearly
impossible mission.
There’s little arguing that Zenit have not spent big money during the last two transfer windows, Domenico Criscito being their only major signing. The Italian defender joined Zenit from Genoa CFC on a reported 7 million Euros deal.
Furthermore, the Russian giants are facing injury concerns at the moment. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/SL-Benfica-c40542.
Zenit won the home leg 3-2 against the Portuguese outfit after ninety minutes of gruelling action. However, the Russian tactician has brushed off their chances to claim a European trophy, revealing that Luciano Spalletti’s men
need to be more realistic.
Bubnov revealed that Zenit are lacking depth in their squad and they need to alter the situation if they are to win the continental tournament in the near future.
Though Bubnov ruled Zenit out of the European tournament, he backed them to retain the Russian Premier League title this season, urging them to focus on the upcoming third league round.
“In Petrograd the current composition is enough for successful performance in the championship of Russia, but not for the Champions League. Their matches against Rubin Kazan and Lokomotiv proved that they do not have strength in
their squad.” The Soviet Cup winner was quoted as saying.
Zenit lost the crunch league game 4-2 against Lokomotiv Moscow on away turf, where the Railroaders came from behind to secure the win.
The Russian top division resumes on March 03, 2012 and Zenit will kick off the third league round playing against the second-placed CSKA Moscow at Arena Khimki.
Speaking on Guus Hiddink’s appointment at Makhachkala stadium, Bubnov admitted that Anzhi Makhachkala are setting up a new trend by making high profile transfers.
