Zero tolerance for everyone!?

If drinking and driving is illegal, should there be a zero tolerance law for everyone and not just for people under the age of 21?

I would vote for prohibition but I know that would never fly. Would this be a nice compromise?

  1. if you are under 21 it is illegal to drink period. it is not illegal to have a drink or two to drive if you are of age. it is a bad idea and a waste of time.

  2. even drinkin 1 or 2 impairs your ability to drive

  3. i really feel like the DUI laws are way too harsh.

dont get me wrong, it is a serious offense, and many lives have been lost due to it. however, there are so many lobbyists on every single level of government, that now when you get a DUI you are practically crucified.

that all being said, i have never gotten a DUI. i have driven when i shouldnt have when i was a foolish youth, but now i would never even think of getting behind the wheel drunk.

  4. I understand where you are coming from.  I've lost friends to drunk drivers and have seen many get DUI's.  I myself love beer.  I drink responsibly.  I don't think that prohibition would be the answer. Like others have said the alcohol would move underground and you'd still have people drinking and driving because alcohol is easy to make on your own.  Most people do drink responsibility and sadly there are others out there who don't.  I think they need to stop being to soft on the first time offenders.  I think it should be a mandatory 30 days in jail and fines for your first DUI.  I think if the that were to happen then the number of DUI's would go down.  I hope it would make people stop and think before getting behind the wheel and choose to find a DD or call a cab.  If you can't get either you shouldn't have gone out to drink in the first place.  Those kind of things need to be set in stone BEFORE you go out for drinks.

  5. What happened?  Did you get a DUI?  Let me guess, you're only 17.

  6. I have zero tolerance for people with stupid opinions... does that count?

  7. How would you measure "zero"? Breathalyzers have enough issues trying to measure at the level they do, making them sensitive enough to read very low doses and not misread other sources of alcohol in the blood (go wash your hands with alcohol-based cleaners, now you've got a 0.0001 BAC)?

There's enough BS with testing for drunks without making it more complex. Scientifically determine a rate where a person is incapacitated, baseline it for average people, hand out breathalyzers to bars and make it a personal responsibility and not the bartender's job to babysit you.

  8. Even one or two glasses of alchool make their effect, so I think that alchoolic drinks should be prohibited for peoples more than 21 years old.

  9. Prohibition was tried once - it failed miserably and led to mass underground crime.

Zero tolerance for driving after a drink is one approach, but more responsible and AMERICAN is allowing mature people to enjoy a drink or two with dinner then drive as long as they are not impaired.

How about stiffer penalties for those who actually drive impaired?
