  1. Due to the inability of the 22 to shoot at longer yardages with a flat trajectory, the bullet drop from 75 yards to 100 yards would put you out of the kill zone by an couple of inches-  This is only an opinion, because I have not run that particular test on the drop at that zero and 100 yards- do the test and see what the drop is. It may be possible, if not, just change your zero to almost 100 yards- but then the close ones would get away. The 22 mag. would handle it, and the .17 would also. You have me curious, now.

  2. A .22 will drop 5" or so between 75 and 100 Yd.s.

Mini Mags. are light hollow points and might not give you

    enough penetration at that distance.

For ground hog & fox sized varmints I'd recommend

    40Gr. H.V. hollow-points.

A standard 40gr. H.V. round zero'ed at 25Yd.s from a high mounted scope will be about 1 1/4" high at 50 Yd.s, 'on' at 60, and about an inch low at 75.

I find that a pretty good hunting zero.

I generally won't shoot at game with a .22 RF at more than 75 Yd.s, (though for 'chicken thief shooting, I might).

  3. I don't see why not, have you looked up the ballistics to see what the drop  is at 100 yards?

  4. Shot placement is the key to taking any animal in a quick and efficient manner.  The mini mag is capable, but really slows down at that distance.  If memory serves me, the mini mag is 1,280 fps at the muzzle, which is sufficient for a shot to 100 yards, but CCI doesn't give me bullet drop or wind drift at 100 yards, they give ballistics to 75 yards.

For future info, there is a bullet that leaves the muzzle at 1.640 fps and is called the Quick Shok.  The bullet breaks into 3 unique pieces on impact, for maximum internal damage and quicker kills.  The Stinger also has a muzzle velocity of 1,640 fps.

Wind drift is going to be as crucial as trajectory at 100 yards with a 22 LR.

  5. The .22 mini mag is a different cartridge than a .22 LR, the rifle chambered for a LR will not accept the mini mag  (.22 mag).  You would be better off getting a CF rifle for serious shooting.  .223 for small game or go up to a .30 and hand load 110 slug with a lighter powder charge.  To answer your question NO.

  6. I am a long time Alaskan hunter and trapper.  I have seen fox hit square with a 22 at 50 feet and run near a mile before dropping.  17hmr and 22 Hornet are a better choice.  If you must use a 22 - use the CCI Stingers - these work the best on fox.  Aim for the shoulders to 'anchor' the animal and dispatch it when you walk up to it.  Unless you are dead in close - avoid a heart shot - you miss the heart and it's a lung shot....... you could be trecking a mile to catch up with the body.

Sighted for 75 yards - you will be a bit too low at 100 yards.  What you need is a BSA 'Sweet 22' scope with it's built in Bullet Drop Compensator.  A quick turn of the k**b and you are sighted dead on after calibration.  Way cool.  I have this on my suppressed Ruger 10/22.  It's a great scope, price is right, MidwayUSA.com, Cabellas and Sportsman's Outfitters carry them.  Very popular.

    Hope this helps

  7. You will have to hold high, and it's not a sure thing.

I'm a fan of the .22, but thats just too far. You owe it to the prey to make a clean ethical kill.

Try the .17 HMR for fox at med. to longer distances.

It will put them down and not wreck the pelt in doing so.

The ammo costs a bit more, but you'll be happy with it.

  8. shorten up your shooting a bit... a fox will be hard to see much less hit at 100 yards.

Others mentioned bullet drop at 100 yards...22 lr is light and the wind will push it around too.

I sight my .22s for 50 yards... that seems to be the magic number for me...I am not a crack rifle shot but can cover 50 rounds with quarter using  a Ruger 77/22 on a calm day at 50 yards...4 power scope

  9. well if your shooting foxes your going to want a more powerful ammo like the cci stinger which is much more powerful than cci minimags and can punch a neat little hole right through him with basically no pelt damage but if you want a bullet that will expand has the same energy as the stinger and doesent leave an exit hole try cci 32 grain segmented hollowpoint  the only flaw with this bullet is that it will leave a slightly bigger entry hole(but still its like half the size of a 17 hmr) but the good part is no exit wound and i used the stingers to kill a fox last night at 100 yards  without any twitching or after shot movement and another fox with the segmented hollow point at roughly 75 yards with no pelt damage  it actually looked like it got stabbed with a pen and the fox shot with the stingers had a slightly smaller hole but an exit wound the size of a .243 caliber size bullet so i guess i would reccomend the segmented hollowpoint for shorter range and the stingers for long range(out to about 150 yards cleanly and past that youve got a runner and at 200 dont even try it it will only wound him and probably kill him from lead poisoning a month later which is cruel and awful)

  10. It is possible but dosent sound like a very good idea, a 22 isent a very powerful rifle and you stand a chance of hitting the fox on a bone or the skull and not getting penitration. And its certianly not a good idea if you intend on recovering the fox. Either move in for a closer shot or get youself a little bigger rifle. ex 22mag,17hmr,17mach 2,22 hornet,223. well good luck and be safe
