Zetterholm, Cozzetti, and Teeth of the Dog are going to run in the Preakness Stakes
The 3-year-old Winter Park Partners owned colt, Zetterholm, will be representing trainer Richard E. Dutrow Jr. in the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on 19 May, 2012. The New York bred colt was first pointed toward the Grade 2, $200,000 Peter
Pan Stakes at Belmont Park on 12 May, but keeping in view his past performances, the colt deserves a step up in class.
The Silver Train colt this year has been exceptional. Though, Zetterholm had his debut race last season in November, but he failed miserably in 11th going six and a half furlongs.
He didn’t start on a winning note the year as well, but finishing second from eleventh is a huge development, and it wasn’t long when he broke his maiden at third asking running over Aqueduct’s dirt track over a mile and 70 yards.
Out of mare Holy Wish by Lord At War, Zetterholm never looked back from there, as he bagged his next race, an allowance at about a mile and 70 yards, the rampant colt excelled under rider J. Alvarado.
However, his last race, the Patsyprospect Stakes at about a mile is what impressed his trainer.
“Zetterholm is doing good,” said Dutrow, who won the Preakness in 2008 with Big Brown. “I thought his last race was his most impressive of all. The question is if he can match up with these kinds of horses. I’m happy to take a shot, I really am.”
Meanwhile, Dullahan will be replaced by the son of Cozzene, Cozzetti, in the Preakness Stakes, who was third in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby and fourth in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
Dale Romans is hoping that his colt hits it big time in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, to make up for his previous misses.
“He hasn’t shown in his races what he’s shown me training yet. One of these days he’s going to wake up and run big,” Romans said. “His Arkansas Derby was a good race; with a little different scenario he probably should have been second. I just think he’s
a good horse, sitting on a big race.”
The Michael Matz trainer, Teeth of the Dog is also pointed toward the Preakness Stakes. The Wood Memorial third place finisher is currently at Fair Hill Center, and there he will breeze once before shipping to Pimlico, as Joe Bravo will be aboard the colt
in the Preakness Stakes.
