Zhang Ning: a true Icon of Badminton
The Chinese badminton player, Zhang Ning, is considered to be one of the finest female players in recent years. Her tremendous abilities on the court have given her world-wide recognition and respect amongst many top badminton players and fans. Ning ruled
the badminton world from 1994 to 2008. Her amazing career has seen many great achievements and reinforced China’s dominance in badminton. Ning has become a true role model for many female athletes world-wide. Her accomplishments have given many badminton players
in China something to strive for.
Ning has many interesting and admirable accomplishments in her career. In 2003, she managed to win the gold medal at the Birmingham World Championships for her amazing skills. In 2006, Ning won the silver medal at the Anaheim World Championships. Her most
impressive performance was when she became the first ever badminton player to win consecutive gold medals in the Olympic singles. She was the gold medal winner at the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004 and also at the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008. Ning has
won over 22 different tournaments and championship opens during her amazing career.
Ning is regarded as an icon in China because of her illustrious badminton career. She started playing badminton in 1994 and successfully competed for 14 years, until her retirement in November 2008 at the age of 33. The mere fact that Ning played competitive
badminton for 14 years is a testament to her dedication and strength, as she took on some of the top players from around the world. After retirement, Ning said that she was satisfied with her life, as she managed to get fame, ability, wealth and agility from
her long successful badminton career. Just the honour of having been able to represent China in all the major badminton tournaments is reward enough.
So successful was Ning, that a Dutch film-maker produced a movie ‘The road to Beijing’, which covers her life. This film was televised world-wide, making her a household name. She is the only badminton player to ever have a film produced about them in the
world. Her hard work and dedication to badminton was put into the inspirational film. Ning's amazing career has paved the way for a new generation of female badminton players in China. Following her successful training and regimented playing-style, many new
female players are taking to the courts to find the same type of success that Ning had.
Ning’s entire life has revolved around badminton. She left badminton at the peak of her career and shattered many records. Ning’s success can be attributed to her hard work and dedication that she brought to badminton. Her fiercely competitive spirit and
tremendous technique, gave her an edge over her nearest rivals. Ning’s dominance put China on the map for competitive badminton world-wide. Her career has also helped female athletes to try and achieve international success by following her example.
After retiring from competitive badminton, Ning began to work as a coach for the national squad. Her vast experience and impeccable playing style has become the backbone of the younger players. China is hoping that some of the new generation of players will
be able to replicate the same type of success that Ning had.
Although her participation in some of the world’s top badminton tournaments will be missed, Ning has left an enormous impact on the badminton court. Her explosive style and calm temperament brought badminton back into the lime-light. As her success grew,
so did the coverage of badminton on the world’s sporting stage. Ning’s contribution both on and off the court make her a true icon of badminton.
