Zhang Xin Jun and Tze-huang Choo one stroke behind the leaders
This news just in that China’s Zhang Xin Jun and Singapore’s Tze-huang Choo have tied for third place at the Australian Professional Golf Association Championship in Queensland.
The first round teed off on a bright Thursday morning. Leaders Daniel Popovic and Scott Strange finished the day’s business at positions one and two respectively.
To Scott Strange, this is in all likelihood going to be an emotionally-charged weekend because it takes him back to the memories of a deceased mother and sister, both of whom he lost to cancer.
"There's always unfinished business when you don't win something," said the Welsh and China Opens champion, adding that this event will be a memorable one.
It may as well be Coolum’s last after the spat between Professional Golf Association officials and Clive Palmer, CEO and owner of Palmer Coolum Resort, spelled doom for the decade-old tournament.
Tze-huang Choo and the Chinaman Zhang Xin Jun really better watch out. If this is going to be Coolum’s last, most big fish here, like Strange or Greg ‘Great White Shark’ Norman will look to make it such an end as would be worthy of remembrance.
Tze-Huang Choo has had a rather good start on the first day. A quick look at the individual scorecard shows a string of well-timed birdies on holes two, three and four. The first nine saw only two bogeys, one on hole five and the other on the par-3 hole
eight.
The back nine of the round also began with beautiful three straight birdies. Choo picked up another two birdies on 13 and 15 and the only other bogey that day he made was on the last hole.
The day’s total was an impressive 5-under 67. Not a bad day’s work, considering he is just a stroke shy of Scott Strange’s grand 66.
Chinaman Zhang Xin Jun did not have as many birdies as Choo had, but what kept him in the race and tied at the third place with the Singaporean was the fact that he did not have as many bogeys either.
The only shot he misfired that day was on the par-4 hole seven. Besides that, the day was a breeze.
