Zheng Jie's bad wrist forces her out of the Australian Open
Zheng Jie, China’s ace tennis player has withdrawn from the Australian Open; Sad but true! The news was confirmed by the player herself via her twitter page. The news that has left many a fan devastated came out on the Christmas Eve. We are sure that took
the cheer right out of most of the fans' Christmas celebrations.
"I did withdraw from next year's Australian Open. It is a hard decision for me to make. I have plenty of good memories and experiences there. But I believe there will be more Australian Opens for me to attend if I can regain my health. Thanks for everyone’s
support and wish you a happy Christmas," wrote China’s Number 2 tennis player on her twitter page.
Speculations about her withdrawal had been circulating the airwaves since last Thursday, when the entry list was released. Zheng’s name being absent from the Australian Open will translate into her losing a grand total of 900 WTA points. Her ranking will
probably also fall below Number 50 in the world as a result of her not playing.
Currently the Asian is ranked Number 26 and has played in a grand total of 7 Australian Opens. This season she even managed to get all the way to the semi finals; her personal best at the event so far. It is a shame that the talented woman will be missing
from the action, especially considering the improvement in her performance during the past seasons at the event.
The reason behind her decision to skip the event is an injury to her left wrist. She got injured while playing in the US Open and the pain has been plaguing her ever since.
Her injury only worsened after she made it to the Flushing Meadows women’s doubles semi-finals. The pain by this point was so bad that she had to undergo surgery on her wrist. Consequently, she had to back out of the Asian Games, an extremely important event
on every Chinese athlete’s calendar.
For now, Zheng Jie will be playing it safe. She hopes to make a full recovery by February next year but will be taking it slow for a while as far as tennis is concerned. From what we hear, we will next get to see her play in the PTT Pattaya Open in Thailand
during the Chinese Spring Festival.
