Zheng Jie expels Alberta Brianti in the 1st round – Rogers Cup 2011
On Monday the main draw of the Rogers Cup 2011 was being played, where the 28-year-old Chinese, Zheng Jie outshone her 31-year-old Italian opponent, Alberta Brianti with a 6-2, 6-1 victory on the Hard courts of the Rexall Centre
in York University, Toronto, Canada.
During their professional career the two had initially met first time this year at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia tournament held in Rome, Italy. Alberta Brianti had defeated her Chinese opponent on the classic clay courts of
this tournament and triumphed with a 6-4, 7-5 and hence, led in the head to head 1-0. The Celestial Power had granted Jie another chance to even out the head-to-head and Hallelujah! She did.
The Chinese was in her groove and with her “ninja” precision; she struck zero double faults and smashed zero aces while, her Italian opponent struck 2 foot faults.
The 28-year-old crushed her opponent’s mentality by throwing brutalised shots with her strong forearm and smashed the ball directly at the Italian, which won her 67% of her total service points. Moreover, by hitting sharp angled
replies she achieved 58% in her total return points, and hence, she accomplished a total of 62% in the total set score, which resulted in almost twice as many points as Brianti’s.
Jie was capable of saving 2 of the 3 break points, along with, clenching a 100% of break points she faced, whereas, the world number 56 (Brianti) had shabby defence and was unable to save 3 of her break points. Thus, winning the
total set with 62%.
Monday was seen as a black day for the top seeds and Brianti was one of them. Having lost the first set with only winning two game points, she was expected to try harder, however, that too didn’t work out and she lost the second
set with only one point, making it a bread stick loss.
Although, both the players had hit 61% of their first serves on target, Brianti lost most of her points in the second serve, where she barely won 3 out of 13 points, making it a 23% and hence, could only manage to attain 42% win
in her total service points. Mean while, Jie had performed consistently in both her serves and bagged a grand 72% win her total service points.
Brianti mustered a pathetic 28% win her total return points against Jie who won 19 out of 33 points, making it a 58% win in her total returns.
Jie secured a place in the second round of the Rogers Cup 2011 by accomplishing a total win of 63%, in the set score, which was 26% more than the world number 56.
Standing at 1.64 meters the Jie sailed through and avenged her loss by equalizing the head to head score.
