Zheng Jie upsets Julia Goerges to advance into second round – Western & Southern Open 2011
Chinese qualifier Zheng Jie earned a surprise victory over the world number twenty in a three setter nail biter match at the Cincinnati Open 2011, a WTA Premier 5 event held in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio, USA. She registered
a 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 victory over the 22-year-old German to secure a second round spot on Monday.
A former top fifteen, Jie overpowered the German after making an epic comeback from stepping off gas in the second set at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. After earning this one hour and fifty-eight minutes success, she extended
her lead in the head-to-head series by 2-0 and moved one step closer to the $ 2,000,000 prize money.
Ranked 65th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Jie founded the desiderated break in the fourth game and stood at a 3-1 lead. Despite losing her edge in the very next game, she roared back by wiping out next three
games in a row to clinch the opener with a 6-2 win. The Chinese fended off one out of two breakpoints faced and capitalised on all three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The frustrated Goerges re-created her magic in the second set and went berserk to reel off first four games in a row before the Chinese could hold on. She then bagged in the following two games to earn a breadstick. The German
faced zero breakpoints and cashed in on half of the six breakpoint chances to her advantage to win comfortably.
The qualifier founded her rhythm again in the final set as she broke the German’s serve in the opening game to put her nose ahead of Goerges. Although she levelled the scores at 2-2, Jie broke Goerges’ serve again in the seventh
game to eventually seal the set with a 6-4 victory. She saved one out of two breakpoints conceded and converted two out of five breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
When summed up the overall performance of the stars, Jie spilled more errors and double faults but clobbered a much better first serve share of 70 percent in contrast with Goerges’ 63 percent. She also registered an impressive
66 percent win on it.
Up next for the Chinese is the winner of the match between thirteenth seeded Serb Jelena Jankovic and Czech Iveta Benesova.
26-year-old Serb made it to the title round at Monterrey and showed top notch performance in the start of the season. However, after her fourth round showing at French Open, she fell to a three match losing streak and is currently
eyeing to snap out from it.
