Zhirkov urges Anzhi to win Russian Cup after a good Russian Premier League campaign – Football News
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yuri-Zhirkov-c37683 has backed Anzhi Makhachkala to win the upcoming Russian Cup final against CSKA Moscow at Terek Stadium (Grozny) next month as a gift to their fans after presenting them with a bronze medal in the
Russian Premier League.
The Russian International defender was delighted with his team’s performance during the ongoing season and credited the entire team, saying that they thoroughly deserved the bronze medal this season.
“To secure a bronze medal during the ongoing Russian championship is a real treat for fans, the largest in the history of the Dagestan football! How cool is that we have achieved this at Makhachkala! We are in
a building process and I think it’s just a sign that we are progressing. I think the medal speaks for itself and will certainly please our fans.
“In fact we have an important match on June 1, the Russian Cup final against CSKA Moscow. We need to prepare for the upcoming match rather than continuing the celebrations,” Zhirkov was quoted as saying.
The Makhachkala-based club secured a third-spot on the league table following their 2-1 win in their latest league tie against Lokomotiv Moscow at Anzhi-Arena on Monday. The Dagestani club came from behind to
win the enthralling league encounter against arch rivals at home.
The Dagestani club, meanwhile, pipped Dynamo Moscow and Rubin Kazan for the European spot this season. Currently, they are leading fourth placed Spartak Moscow by five points and trailing second placed Zenit
St. Petersburg by massive eight points.
There is little arguing to the statement that Anzhi have been performing well in the competition this season, having defeated the likes of FC Krylia Sovetov Samara, Dynamo Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg to reach
the final of the prestigious cup tournament.
The last time Anzhi faced CSKA in a league tie at home, Guus Hiddink’s men managed to claim all three points. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mbark-Boussoufa-c25085 scored a late goal after Lacina Traore put the Wild-division in front.
Zhirkov warned his side against complacency, stressing that they will find it difficult to defeat the Moscow-based club this time around given that their confidence is high after winning the league title.
