Zi Liang Derek Wong grabs Men’s Singles title at Vietnam International Challenge 2012
Singapore’s Zi Liang Derek Wong lived up to expectations as he grabbed Men’s Singles title after beating Wisnu Yuli Prasetyo of Indonesia in the final showdown of Ciputra Hanoi Vietnam International Challenge 2012 in Vietnam, on Sunday, April 1.
Derek Wong, who was top seed in Vietnam Open, showed his elevated skills in the game and remained successful in establishing his dominance in the arena.
Nevertheless, the Singaporean had to employ all of his skills to overpower his talented Indonesian opponent.
Derek Wong consumed 55 minutes in the court to prove his mettle as he defeated Wisnu in well-fought three games and emerged as the title winner.
In the first game, Derek Wong could not find a perfect start as he remained struggling until the end of opening half.
In the meanwhile, Wisnu was impressive in the court and remained in complete control of the pace. He did not let his rival to find a good rhythm and managed a convincing gap until the one-minute interval.
After the break, Derek Wong tried his best to catch up his lower ranked Indonesian opponent but failed to live up to expectations and lost the set with a four-point deficit of 17-21.
In the second set, Derek Wong played a little better and managed to progress equally on the score board. Both men played tremendous badminton by keeping the pace of rallies fast.
Until the one-minute interval, both shuttlers remained close as no one got a strong position in the game.
They continued playing thrilling badminton in the concluding half of second set and reached at the crucial stage of 20-20.
At this breath-taking stage, Derek Wong controlled his nerves and played with precision. He managed to level the match by winning the second game with a 22-20 score on the board.
In the decider, Derek Wong was everywhere in the court and he did not commit mistakes at any stage. He set up a wonderful gap until the break.
After the interval, the Indonesian tried to accelerate his speed but failed to produce any benefit as his opponent was in full swing. Derek Wong ended the final set with a superb 21-10 score on the board.
The Singaporean won this title clash by taking 55 minutes with a thrilling score of 17-21, 22-20 and 21-10.
