Zi Liang Derek Wong sets higher targets after playing well at the 2011 BWF World Championships
Singapore’s emerging shuttler, Zi Liang Derek Wong wants to go higher at the international level especially when he has defeated the former Olympic and World Champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia in Men’s Singles draw of the BWF World Championships 2011,
at Wembley Arena.
Derek Wong, who has captured Number 38 position in the Men’s Singles world rankings, has tasted his first victory over a top-ten shuttler in a major event. Now, the 22-year-old Singaporean is looking forward to extend his impressive performance in upcoming
events.
Derek Wong surprisingly defeated Taufik, one of the greatest shuttlers of all-time and the fourth seed at the World Championships, in a straight set fight by playing to his full potential. In both games, Derek Wong remained ahead of his experienced opponent,
who is famous for his planned game and calmness in the court.
The Singaporean proved that he has achieved a higher level of badminton skill which is required to become a top-class shuttler. Right after defeating Taufik at the World Championship match, Derek Wong suddenly found himself in the limelight as he received
phone calls from the media. Derek Wong said, “I was surprised that they were working so early. But it was nice to receive so much attention from the media for once.”
Derek’s father, Choon Keat, expressed his opinion about his son by saying, “Derek has power, speed and stamina. He needs to fine-tune the technical aspects of his play and, for that, he will need good sparring partners.”
Derek Wong has a great feeling after winning the biggest match of his professional career so far. He said, “My biggest win of my career has made me realise that I need to be consistent. I want to start making the headlines more regularly.”
Now, Derek Wong is working hard to become more prepared in all aspects of the game. He is looking forward to make his mark in the Men’s Singles category at the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia, which will take place in November.
