Zimbabwe's opposition party leader Morgan Tsvangirai was detained by police Wednesday at a roadblock while campaigning for the upcoming run-off vote, a party official told reporters.

The Movement for Democratic Change leader was stopped at a roadblock outside the city of Bulawayo around 10 a.m. local time, party spokespeople told reporters. Party officials said Tsvangirai was illegally detained but not arrested.

"It appears they want to disrupt our campaign programme," the BBC cited spokesman Nelson Chamisa as saying.

Another party spokesman George Sibotshiwe said Tsvangirai and about 14 MDC officials are being held at a police station in Lupane, north of the city of Bulawayo. No charges have been filed.

  1. How come is Mugabe in Rome....? This is a disgrace. You know, I don't care any more about any of them. They are all a bunch of hypocrites with the blood of innocent shamwaris on their hands and hulle gaan kak almal....Mbeki, Zuma, Mugabe, hulle almal...en Martinus Kortbroek van fokken Schalkwyk. Dis die Duiwel wat nou ons land regeer.

I want to go and live on my own in the Kalahari I really do.......

    Kommandant van Emjayfontein.

  2. It is sad that even UN and Bush allows Mugabe to get away with everything  -  WHY???????

  3. And Mugabe has the cheek to posture in Rome staying at a top hotel while his people starve.

He probably orchestrated the arrest to take place while he was 'innocently' overseas.

Morgan Tsvangirai is a very courageous man and the spokesman made the understatement of the year.

Mugabe is so evil - smooth with it.  He has some nerve to put it mildly.

I do not understand why the UN, let alone other African leaders just stand by and allow these things to happen.

Relief workers are being kicked out of Zimbabwe too...? no witnesses to the 'election'?.

Never mind the people they were helping.

I wish, wish, wish Mr M would get his come uppance, but dare not say how.

  4. that sucks

  5. Morgan Tsvangirai is Mugabe's man.

His father was one of Mugabe's closest allies when he controlled the labour unions in Zimbabwe as did Morgan.

Mugabe has set up his own opposition controlled by him through the CIO, what better way is there, for Mugabe to find out who is not supporting him.

If Zvangirai was really this popular then Mugabe would have all ready dispatched him to be with his ancestors without batting an eye.

Mugabe doesn't keep his opposition alive this long.

  6. Wish I can get an e-mail or something thru to Mr Mbeki and ask him whether he's happy now???  Never thought the day would come where I'd be questioning my erstwhile respect for Pres Mbeki - sorry Mr President, now you know why we leave SA for other countries round the world. Just wish you could read this!

  7. I'm surprised that he is even alive.

  8. Ag skyli, it is terrible, you and i know that it is just going to be a matter of time before they kill him.....

  9. I read yesterday that anual inflation in Zimbabwe came close to 2 million percent last month as they desperately printed more money to bribe voters.

Whatever tactics Mugabe tries to use over the month this reality will ultimately mean his demise.. I think soon.

Mugabe will lose the election.. I hope he uses his reported high IQ to realise the game is up... if not I think there will be genocide..  arguably there is already ecomomic genocide.

Tsvangirai gave a brilliant address to parliment the other day and has real support on the ground.. that is why Zanu PF will use these pathetic games

  10. You are witnessing a forerunner to what will happen in South Africa should anyone threaten to unseat the ANC. Africans dont do democracy and a Zooma told you recently the ANC will be in power "until Jesus comes." The saddest thing is the wimps in the West stand and watch Countries raped and wrecked by African Despots and continue to make excuses for them. How Britain badly needs another Churchill and I for one would never donate any money or any anything to Africa. Your troubles in South Africa are starting for real now with Zooma/Mbeki and the so called "xenophobia" and the ANC will reduce South Africa to Zimbabwe status even quicker then Mugabe destroyed Rhodesia.
