Mashonaland Eagles scored 335 runs on the first day of the four-day match against Southern Rocks in the Castle Logan Cup on Monday, December 12, 2011 at Harare Sports Club.
After winning the toss, Eagles chose to bat first, in a bid to post enough run on the board to give their opponents a run for their money.
Meanwhile, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Southern-Rocks-c845, who are an extremely formidable team in the current season, were unfazed by losing the toss, and knew they had the players in their squad capable enough of snatching victory from almost anywhere.
Eagles’ openers, Cephas Zhuwao and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tinotenda-Mutombodzi-c2684 gave their side an opening stand of 65 runs, before Zhuwao was dismissed by the Rocks after playing a knock of 27 runs off 63 deliveries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/F-Mutizwa-c1426, was the next man in, as the batsman challenged the Southern Rocks bowlers by playing each shot on merit.
The partnership between Mutombodzi and Mutizwa proved extremely vital for their team as they crafted a potent resistance against the opposition, preventing a batting collapse.
Mutombodzi, then found his way back to the pavilion after cracking a knock of 40 runs off 57 deliveries, which triggered a batting collapse in the ranks of Mashonaland as Southern Rocks grabbed a couple of early wickets to climb back in the match.
However, the arrival of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Regis-Wiriranai-Chakabva-c84623 changed the course of the game as he crafted a sensational partnership with Mutizwa to leave the opposition flabbergasted.
The duo clobbered 172 runs in the 5th wicket-partnership, leaving Rocks in disarray. The batsmen exhibited their dominance by smashing the bowlers all around the park without remorse and made sure not to give away their wicket cheaply.
Mutizwa hammered an innings of 118 runs, while Chakabva amassed 95 runs off 126 deliveries before the two batsmen found their way back to the pavilion.
With the departure of the two batsmen, Rocks cleaned up the rest of the batting line-up without letting the batsmen score in double figures. Consequently, Eagles ended their innings by posting 335 runs on the board at stumps on the first day of the match.
From Southern Rocks, medium-pacer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brian-Vitori-c1198 was the most successful bowler with five wickets to his name.
