The http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hasan-c61990 as captain for the five match One Day series against Zimbabwe. However, it seemed as if Shakib was not keen on taking up the job.
The captaincy issue has been hanging in the air for quite some time as Shakib has been reluctant to captain the team.
“If you ask me if I am happy or not, then the answer is no”, he commented on learning upon the news.
His appointment to lead the side comes after a very successful stint during the historic http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mashrafe-Mortaza-c1917 was ruled
out of the series due to a sprained ankle suffered in the first match.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief executive officer Manzur Ahmed admitted that the captaincy has been somewhat “imposed” upon the young player as the BCB officials tried hard to “convince” him.
Ahmed said that although Mashrafe is now “fit and is included in the side but the officials wanted to keep Mashrafe away from the pressure and burden of captaincy”. He also said that the board has decided to give the captaincy to Shakib as he has been “successful
recently”.
The 23-year old was the man-of-the-series against the Kiwis for his all round performance. He was also successful in registering a clean sweep of 2-0 Test series win against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 last year.
The series against Zimbabwe would be a testing podium for Shakib as his success or failure would give a fair idea about his chances to lead the side in the ICC World Cup 2011 that would be co-hosted by Bangladesh.
However, Ahmed said that “a long term stint is still viable”.
Ahmed explained that the board is looking for a series to practice and that they would be analyzing the player’s form and their ability to handle the pressure to decide the World Cup squad.
The selectors also announced a 15-man squad for the Zimbabwe series, which includes opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tamim-Iqbal-c2640 and Mohammad Ashraful, who returned after missing the series against the Kiwis.
Iqbal was recovering from a wrist injury for the past five months whereas Ashraful has been proving his mettle in domestic cricket as well as leading a second string side at the Asian Games 2010 to win their first ever gold for their country.
The inclusion of Iqbal means that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahriar-Nafees-c2486 is axed even though he potentially had a strong performance against the Black Caps. Nafees was clearly disappointed saying that he believed he had a “good play in the last series and he was expecting to play
in the Zimbabwe series”.
The One Day series between the “underdogs” Zimbabwe and the Tigers is scheduled to begin from 1st December in Dhaka.
