Zimbabwe tour of Bangladesh 2010: Bangladeshi Captain Shakib speaks out
As Zimbabwe are currently struggling against Bangladesh in the second One Day International (ODI), the Tigers camp had a share of their problems off the field.
Bangladesh’s newly appointed captain, Shakib Al http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hasan-c61990 spoke about his role in the squad during a pre-match conference.
He stated that he was not ready to take up the responsibility of leading the team for the Zimbabwe series.
Shakib and his team have been facing a backlash from their fans and supporters as Zimbabwe defeated a stronger Tigers squad in the first ODI at Mirpur on Wednesday by nine runs.
Shakib said that he wanted to focus on his cricket one hundred percent and the pressure of leading the side hinders his focus on the game.
“I was not prepared to take the job, the captaincy,” Shakib told the reporters in a very straightforward fashion.
He also admitted, “I am not satisfied with my role as a captain. The reasons are numerous, and I cannot detail all of them at the moment.”
However, he gave a hint of his dissatisfaction saying that he was not happy with the team selection.
“The captain should have a clearly defined role, but anyway I don’t want to talk about the team,” the 23-year-old youngster concluded.
It appeared as if he was confused about his role and was unable to convey his discontent. He was not given a “free hand” with the team selection but dismissed the talks saying that he did not want to talk about the selection.
Shakib replaced http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 series as the experienced seamer was ruled out due to an ankle strain. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) were in a fix but decided to give the role of the captain to the all- rounder who has
been impressive with the bat and the ball and seemed an obvious choice given his role in the domestic circuit.
Shakib, initially turned down the offer but the BCB selectors managed to convince him to lead the side in the middle of an important series. Rest is history; as Shakib not only captained the Tigers camp convincingly but went on to win the ODI series with
a 4-0 whitewash.
BCB has been swinging like a pendulum in between Mortaza and Shakib ahead of the World Cup which is being co-hosted by Bangladesh in February 2011.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747’s Australian coach Jamie Hiddons however, gave his reaffirmation in Mortaza’s ability to captain the Tigers saying that he did a good job in England and would be in form to lead the side adding that the Board and the team is aware of Shakib’s
hesitance to take up the job and Mortaza would be happy to reclaim his role in the squad.
Shakib, however, said that his passion for the game can never be questioned and the team would work hard to win the one day series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045.
