Zimbabwe wins against Australia? ICC World Cup upsets
I hear laughter. I can even see people falling off their chairs when they read this title. This is the Cricket World Cup 2011 we’re talking about. There can be upsets, but beating Australia is just not possible.
The tenth edition of the Cup has kicked off in the Subcontinent and we haven’t seen any upsets yet.
We all secretly hoped that India would lose against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 in the opening game on Saturday. We prayed to the heavenly powers vested above for a miracle.
The Bengali Tigers fought hard during the day-night match on their home ground in Mirpur, but Virendar Sehwag and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Virat-Kohli-c95424 slaughtered the poor Tigers, who were reduced to kittens. You just hope that Bangladesh can recover in the tournament because they
are like teddy bears. You just want to cuddle them.
Then http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 on Sunday, winning by 210 runs, even though the Canadians bowled pretty neatly in the first 9 overs.
It is not even hilarious when you get to hear that before Justin Bieber’s team was reduced to tears, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752. Yes, the same Kiwis, who have been struggling to find form for almost 2 years now.
But what if Australia loses today?
There is surely no harm to think the unthinkable? It is the World Cup after all, where the sun shines brightly and the children slide over the rainbows. But there is always a step-mother or a wicked witch, who makes things difficult for the nice guys.
Yes, winning the shinny World Cup trophy is not always rosy. You have to fight the unwary bad guys (no, not Salman Butt and the Mohammad gang) but the small, not those huge teams, who create obstacles in reaching the Cup.
But these upsets help in keeping interest of an average cricket viewer, who will only watch the game since everyone is going gaga about the World Cup.
The upsets would also help restore the faith that upsets in One Day International cricket still exist. It will also make us believe that miracles do happen, and will continue to occur so as it validates the presence of the higher power and our belief in
religion.
Okay, so I might have gone overboard with the whole belief thing, but the point is, it will be fun to see Zimbabwe defeat the Aussies.
A loss to Zimbabwe would be similar to rubbing salt into the Ashes wounds that must still be fresh in the Kangaroo’s memory. How the England fans would celebrate and then if the Poms lose to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Netherlands-c753 on Tuesday it would bring the Barmy Army back down
to earth.
Now see there is hope in history. Zimbabwe managed to defeat Australia in the 1983 Cricket World Cup in England. The game was also the opening match and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 won by 13 runs.
What happened afterwards is not necessary at all but the point is that it was 9
June, 1983 and just 16 days later http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 won the Cup.
24 years later, Zimbabwe again defeated Australia in the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 Cup in 2007 in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, that too in the opening game of Group B. 12 days later, India won the first ever Twenty20 Cup.
So, hypothetically, if Zimbabwe defeats http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 today, 40 days later, India might win the final. If Australia manages to get the better of the poor Zimbabweans, the Indian team will need to sit back and scream their heart out as Australia will win the
Cup for the fifth time.
