seriously i have to ask if i am alone in this school of thought .....does nicholas cage ever change his facial expression ....from gone in 60 seconds ,con air ,ghost rider ,city of angels ,national treasure ,next , face off, the weatherman ,etc...

the thing is i dont hate the guy i just think he brings a certain woodeness to the movies hes in ,emotionless ....seriously its like hes had a botox injection in the face and cant express true emotion in a character anymore .....he was good ages ago but definately in the last ten yrs he has gotten terrible and every face lacks emotion and looks similiar to the face ben stiller repeatedly does in zoolander ........comments ,opinions or whatever ?

[really needed to get that off my chest]

  1. i would totally agree, there was a time early in his career when he played characters with subtlety, but now he just autopilots on his favoured expression. it makes him look like droopy. either that or he plays a lunatic and just goes crazy. i havnt seen a good performance from him since the rock, or maybe face-off, but even that was over the top. i dont hate the guy either but i think he is just coasting for a paycheck nowadays

  2. Hope you're feeling better after that rant.  I guess I can see what you mean, and if there was ever a performance where he completely breaks from that mold, it might be 8MM.

  3. You know, I never really thought about it until you mentioned it, but YES, he does rather look like a botox experiment gone ari.

However, his roles are normally in good movies, except that awful, The Wicker Man.......... what a waste.

  4. I have been thinking about this exact thing for a few years. It kinda sucks cuz I really like him as an actor, but your 100% correct. I think I have seen all his movies.  My personal favorite though his Valley Girl. That was the first movie I ever saw him in and I still watch it occasionally. Also loved Gone in 60 Seconds. Wicker Man was seriously retarded. Who knew they literally meant an actual "wicker man" and 8mm was just wrong. It's not just that his facial expression doesn't change anymore it's just the same face and sometimes it feels like the same "character" just seen in different situations (movies).

  5. You bring up a good point. But I think that male actors are often at a disadvantage to actresses. Actresses can alter their appearance drastically by changing their makeup, changing their length, color and style of hair, and wearing glasses and prosthetics (like Kidman's fake nose in The Hours).  But men are more limited, I think. There is not much that Nickolas Cage can do to alter his physical appearance, especially with his thinning hair, prominent nose, and distinctive smile. And it's not like he hasn't tried. Remember his curly perm in the movie Adaptation (2002), his long, stringy hair in Con Air (1997), and his wild and crazy wide-eyed look in Face/Off (1997)? I've seen just about all his movies and if you are looking for some notable variation in Cage's facial appearance, try 8MM.  He shows true fear, loving concern for his wife and child, sadness, etc. The Wicker Man has to be his worst film to date.
