The Borussia Dortmund sporting director regards Mats Hummels as the best centre-back in the German squad.
Despite a few shaky performances, Michael Zorc believes the former Bayern Munich man should start ahead of Per Mertesacker and Jerome Boateng. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back started for Die Mannschaft in their 5-3 defeat to
Switzerland and was held responsible for a couple of goals.
Zorc insisted that even though Hummels started most of the games for his club this season, winning the Bundesliga title and DFB Pokal (German Cup), but he has failed to nail down a regular place in the national side. Many argue
that lack of international experience might influence the coach’s decision.
Over the past few years the German side has been dominated by Bayern Munich players but now the balance has shifted. Even though the national side still consists of a number Bayern’s players but now other clubs have emerged as
major contributors towards the national side.
"If there's one thing that the Dortmund players are perhaps missing, it could be their lack of international experience" the Borussia Dortmund sporting director was quoted as saying in an interview.
Hummels made 41 appearances for the ‘Black Yellows’ in the 2011-2012 season and his club’s sporting director believes it is a no brainer to select Per Mertesacker ahead of him.
The Arsenal defender, on the other hand, has had a season to forget after his move to North London where he failed to hold a regular place in the starting line-up. The former Werder Bremen man was responsible for few high profile
errors and eventually lost his place to the Frenchman Laurent Koscielny.
"The national team coach should know that he can rely on our players, though. And on Mats Hummels in particular, he's Germany's best centre-back." he added.
After leaking around 7 goals in 2 matches, Die Mannscaft’s defense has been a major concern for Joachim Low. He continues to search for an appropriate partner for Holger Badstuber in the heart of German defence and the former Bayern
Munich man has emerged as the leading contender feature with him.
