Zsuzsanna Jakabos claims Women’s 200m IM gold: Day three – 2012 Columbus Grand Prix
Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary claimed gold medal of the Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on day three of the 2012 Columbus Grand Prix at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Sunday, March 11.
The 22-year-old Jakabos met expectations of her fans by spoiling the party of her challengers in the 200m IM discipline. With her magnificent efforts in the four-lap event, she faced no trouble in cementing her place on the victory stand for gold medal.
Jakabos confronted strong competition from Natalie Coughlin of California Aquatics in the first half of the race, but with her utter determination, she succeeded in proving her eligibility for gold medal of the event.
The 29-year-old Coughlin was the foremost swimmer to leap into the water. With her ruthless aggression, she dominated the first lap of the event by posting a time of 27.40 seconds. She remained 0.81 seconds ahead of Jakabos, who completed her first lap of
the event in a time of 28.21 seconds.
Coughlin kept serving notice of her talent in the second lap, where she remained top fastest swimmer and ended her initial half of the race in a time of 1 minute and 01.78 seconds. She was followed by Jakabos, who was just 0.07 seconds slower from her competitor
and posted a time of 1 minute and 01.85 seconds.
Jakabos elevated her pace in the third lap of the event, where she surpassed Coughlin’s effort by producing an effort of 1 minute and 40.97 seconds. With her fascinating effort, she remained just 1.02 seconds faster from Coughlin, who covered the equivalent
distance with an effort of 1 minute and 41.99 seconds.
The Hungarian specialist went full rampant in the final round, where she earned her way to the top of podium for gold medal by reporting 2 minutes and 11.98 seconds. Coughlin ended her swim in second place as she reported 2 minutes and 12.90 seconds. Similarly,
the third spot of the event was claimed by Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto, who clocked 2 minutes and 13.56 seconds.
Furthermore, the position holders collected medals at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
