Zsuzsanna Jakabos occupies Women’s 400m IM gold medal: Day two – 2011 Swimming World Cup, Stockholm
Zsuzsanna Jakabos of Hungary showered her expertise in the Women’s 400m Individual Medley (IM) final on the second day of the 2011 Swimming World Cup series in Stockholm, on Sunday, October 16.
Stockholm is the second stop of seven-stage World Cup series organised by the international aquatic sport governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Jakabos remained dominant in the 400m event from the start of the race as she completed her initial 100 metres of the swim by touching the wall in 1 minute and 01.63 seconds. She was followed by Izumi Kato of Japan, who completed the same distance in 1 minute
and 02.84 seconds.
Similarly, both competitors initiated a neck-to-neck race, trying to escape each other for the top finish. The duo continued their battle for gold medal while Jakabos completed her first half of the race in a time of 2 minutes and 08.78 seconds against Kato’s
2 minutes and 13.91 seconds effort.
Jakabos continued her thrilling performance in remaining laps of the IM discipline and clocked a splendid 4 minutes and 29.65 seconds effort for gold medal. She was nearly seven seconds slower than the championship mark of 4 minutes and 22.88 seconds, made
by Kathryn Meaklim of South Africa in 2009.
Her extraordinary effort was nearly two seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Kato, who reached the victory stand for silver medal by producing a time of 4 minutes and 31.27 seconds.
Kato remained 4.43 seconds slower than her closest competitor and Hungarian swimmer, Evelyn Verraszto, who stood on the podium for bronze medal by clocking a time of 4 minutes and 35.70 seconds. The fourth spot of the race was secured by Sara Thyden of Sweden,
who concluded her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 38.83 seconds.
Jakabos articulated her happiness after clinching gold medal of the distant IM event while the arena also appreciated phenomenal efforts of all position holders,
Furthermore, these swimmers will race each other in the third leg of World Cup in Moscow on Tuesday, October 18.
