The Spanish shot-stopper was involved in a huge blunder during the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana, but the Barcelona sporting director believes Valdes should not be criticized.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 faced their arch-rivals, Real Madrid, in the two-legged final of the Supercopa de Espana.
The first leg was scheduled to take place at the Nou Camp, and La Blaugrana were expected to win the game, considering there were almost 92000 fans present in the stadium.
The first half ended in a goalless draw, but with both the teams coming back from the half-time team talk, they seemed to be more direct in their approach.
Even though Barcelona dominated most of the game in terms of possession, Madrid scored the first goal of the game.
A corner taken by Mesut Ozil found http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Cristiano-Ronaldo-c9629 inside the penalty area, and the Portuguese skipper headed the ball towards the goal and found the back of the net.
Madrid were leading, but only for a minute.
The home team did not take much time to equalize, as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Coentrao on pace.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Iker-Casillas-c16815 absolutely stood no chance, and Barcelona were back in business.
The Copa del Rey champions were simply not through, and a wonder ball from Andres Iniesta found Xavi Hernandez inside the penalty area, and the Spanish midfielder easily slotted it to find the back of the net.
Barcelona were winning the game 3-1, and it was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordi-Alba-c19111 who gave a back pass to Victor Valdes inside Barcelona’s penalty area.
The Catalan goalkeeper tried to control the ball and added an extra touch to it, by that time, the Argentine winger, Angel Di Maria was on to him and he took no time to snatch the ball away from him and find the back of the net.
Barcelona conceded another goal at home, and the match ended 3-2. Even though Barcelona won, Madrid now have 2 away goals to take home.
Even though it is all considered to be Victor Valdes’ fault, former Barcelona goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizarreta believes that no one should criticize Valdes for what he did.
While speaking about Valdes, Zubizarreta stated:
"Mistakes are part of a goalkeeper's career. Victor has saved us far more goals than he has conceded over the years - I'm sure that after tonight he will go on to have a perfect season."
"It's a blow, but to win against your rival is always important. Now we will have to put on a great show at the Bernabeu."
Barcelona will now travel to the Santiago Bernabeu on 29th of August, as the second leg of the Supercopa de Espana is still left to be played.
