Why are there heads falling off/ I get beautiful blooms and then the next thing I know it looks like someone snipped them off with scissors!

I've searched in the pots(they are in big patio pots) for any type of snip worm or bug but found nothing.

  1. Squash blooms typically only last a day or 2 before being dropped by the plant.

It is not always true regarding male flowers being first.  I have one in a pot and this morning I had my first 2 blooms..a male and a female open at the same time.  I don't rely on bees to pollinate anymore so I hand pollinate to double my chances.

  2. Sorry to say you may wish to look at a close neighbor as the culprit. The blossoms are very tasty when drenched in a batter and fried on the stove. You may have an after hours blossom thief in the area looking for an easy midnight snack.

  3. Zucchini first produce masses of male flowers before they start producing female flowers which are the fruit-producing flowers. Female flowers have a tiny baby zucchini just behind the flower head. Male flowers have a straight stem. They open for a day then drop off. The picture shows one of each.

Don't worry. Your plants sound healthy and will soon start producing more zucchini than you can handle.

As the other people say - the flowers are tasty when deep fried in batter.

  4. maybe a neighbor IS snipping them off with scissors. they're edible!

  5. The first flowers that appear are male and drop naturally. If you have fruiting flowers that are falling, it is usually due to insufficient pollination. Look for bees between 7 and 8 am. Don't use insecticides that can kill bees.
