Zumba Fitness: An Alarming new trend emerges in the United Kingdom, but why?
When news first broke that the world would end in 2012, based on the fact that it was the year the Ancient Mayan calendar ended on, many people were skeptical. However, many of those skeptics - many here implies the gaming population - are starting to believe
there may be some truth to it after all.
The reason being the video game sales charts in the United Kingdom and the alarming picture they are painting. Yes, everyone knows that the UK has its own way of doing things and that they have a unique culture with a rich history, but it seems all is not
well in the land that gave the world the beautiful game of football.
Zumba Fitness, the game developed by 505 studios and released on the Nintendo Wii, has been at the top of the overall UK Sales charts for, not one, not two, not three, but five weeks!
This is a nation where 51% of the population is involved in video games one way or the other; meaning that out of 60-million people almost 31-million are part of the demographic that classifies as gamers.
One has to ask the question, what is Zumba Fitness doing at the top of the charts? Before asking another, more alarming question: What is Zumba Fitness doing at the top of the charts for the previous FIVE weeks?!
There have been plenty of fitness oriented games since the implementation of motion control in the current batch of next generation consoles, but none have had much success and none have topped the charts.
So then what is going on? Is Zumba Fitness really that good a game? The answer is a tricky one, mostly because the question itself is flawed. Can one even consider Zumba Fitness a video game? Yes, it’s on a video game console and yes it is interactive, but
one would have a hard time calling the title a video game.
Then there is another embarrassing fact: Zumba Fitness is managing to outsell every other title on the market. It seems the United Kingdom has suddenly become fitness conscious, something that may have been inspired by the recent Owen Hargreaves fitness
video, and Zumba seems to be the beneficiary.
Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Dirt 3 and even Football Manager 2011 are all behind the 505 Studios-developed game. While the others may be understandable, how the game is outselling Football Manager in the UK is a little worrying.
If a country where the majority of the population is into football, and play video games, prefer Zumba Fitness to a Call of Duty or sports title, then it can safely be concluded that the world is indeed coming to an end.
The word Zumba even sounds like something one could use to describe the apocalypse if they wanted to.
However, Bettor.com does not want to accept that the world is coming to an end next year. One of the reasons is that we, and we are sure that the general population will agree, cannot fathom the thought of dying without knowing how the Assassin’s Creed saga
will end (even the latest title is not going to answer all the questions).
One of the most plausible reasons, which market analysts may have overlooked but Bettor.com found as the most likely reason, is that fact that the UK is known for football and with the football season set to start in just over a month’s time, all the clubs
and its players, (read half the population) are currently in Pre-Season training.
‘What do players do in Pre-Season training?’ the reader might ask. The answer is they work on their fitness, and which game has Fitness at the end of it?
So there the readers have it, Zumba Fitness’s extraordinary sales explained by Bettor.com, you need not worry, the world is not going to end in 2012, its just that football clubs are using Zumba Fitness to get their players into shape.
Hopefully…
