Zuzana Kamasova wins the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup by two strokes
Zuzana Kamasova of Slovakia won the Lalla Meryem Golf Cup held at the picturesque par-72 Golf du Soleil in Agadir, Morocco by two strokes on Sunday. With her historic win, 32-year-old Kamasova has become the first Slovakian ever to triumph at the Ladies
European Tour (LET) event. Also, she has been the sole representative of Slovakia on the LET over the last five years.
Kamasova carded a four-over-par 76 in the final round to post an aggregate total of two-under-par 286 for the four-round tournament. The Slovakian took a two-stroke lead on the second day of the tournament, extended it to four strokes in the third round,
and maintained it on the final day to record the maiden victory of her career.
An excited Kamasova told reporters after the win, “I am just super happy. It really means the world to me because golf is super new in Slovakia. Altogether we have 6000 golfers so it is not even viewed as a sport until now unfortunately. For me to win a
tournament might actually move the sport in Slovakia forward."
Her previous career-best performance was tying for ninth spot at the 2008 Suzhou Taihu Ladies Open in China. Kamasova was able to post only one birdie and four bogeys, including a double bogey six in difficult conditions . She double-bogeyed the par-4 11th
followed by bogeys on the 12th, 13th and 15th.
An emotional Kamasova added, "The last two years have been really tough for me so I’m so grateful things are just happening.”
The Amateur Alexandra Bonetti of France fired the day’s best round of six-under-par 66 in order to share the second spot on the leader board with Germany's Caroline Masson and Kiran Matharu of England at even-par 288. The rest of the golfers taking part
in the tournament failed to manage total aggregate scores of under-par. Sarah Kemp of Australia finished in fifth spot tying with Becky Brewerton of Wales at one-over-par 289.
The joint leader after two rounds with Kamasova, French Anne-Lise Caudal slipped to seventh place in the final round, tying with Tara Davies of Wales, South African Ashleigh Simon and Klara Spilkova of the Czech Republic at two-over-par 290. The opening
day leader, Australian Kristie Smith tied for 15th position at four-over-par 292 with six other players.
The winner Kamasova, who was taking part in the tournament upon the sponsor’s invitation, was overwhelmed with her success. She said her victory would give the sport a major boost in her native country, Slovakia. Kamasova collected the trophy and the winner’s
cheque of 48,750 Euros.
