Zuzana Ondraskova sinks Lauren Davis in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open
30-year-old Czech veteran, Zuzana Ondraskova crushed wildcard entrant Lauren Davis of the United States in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells on Wednesday night. The contest lasted barely 70 minutes with a straight sets victory for
Ondraskova at 6-2, 6-1, giving her pass into the second round of the event.
Ondraskova exhibited her sublime form in the contest, giving away little opportunities to her opponent. The Czech had an impressive service game and took 70 per cent serve points, as her aggressive strategy proved too good for the 17-year-old Davis, who
crumbled under match pressure.
Ondraskova’s forehand worked perfectly for her, as she thumped a number of winners down the line. An excellent overall performance by Ondraskova earned her a comprehensive victory over her young competitor.
Davis proved too bleak on her serve, delivering just 52 per cent accuracy. Her costly unforced errors, including four double faults, exacerbated her position in the match. She had merely one chance to break the opponent’s serve in the whole match, but the
inexperienced teenager squandered it. The American simply appeared a complete mismatch for the Czech veteran.
The American looked in all sort of confusion right from the beginning, as her strokes did not meet their marks and shot selection was poor at times. Davis merely won 32 points in the set while her opponent nabbed 57 from a total of 89 points in the first
contest.
Ondraskova broke her opponent in the very first serve game and took a 3-0 lead early in the opener. She won 16 of 22 serve points in the set and was assisted with four double faults from Davis, putting the Czech in a commanding position of 5-2 in the set.
Ondraskova delivered her second serve break, concluding the first set at 6-2.
The following set brought more worries for the American teenager, as her serve percentage dropped alarmingly to just 37 per cent, as she managed to clinch just 5 out of 19 serve points. Ondraskova fully capitalised upon the dreary conditions of her opponent
and won 28 of the total 40 points in the set. Her serve percentage was excellent and she was even brilliant with her return game.
Davis held her service only in her second serve game and then was broken in all the games to follow. She had a break point in the fifth game of the second set, but was denied by the sheer brilliance of her opponent. The American failed to post any real challenge
to her opponent and surrendered the game to her. Ondraskova struck three serve breaks in the set to seal victory for on an assertive note of 6-1.
Ondraskova will face the fifth seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone in the second round of the Paribas Open. Schiavone received a bye to reach the second round.
