The 20th century was the 19XX's - same as the 19th century being the 18XX's, and so on. If you think right back to the start, they would have said "this is the first century - we are in year 0." then 100 years later "happy new year it's the year 100! Welcome to the second century!" So we are now in the eighth year of the 21st century.

It's the 21st century. One century=100 years, but so far it's only been 8 years. In 92 years it will be a full century, and the 22nd century will begin. =]

There was no year 0  ... so the new century started at 2001.
