Yes, Tom is right.  Five feet is too close, carefully move it if you can; they will grow larger over time.  We have a 60-year-old Fuerte tree in our yard that my grandfather planted.  It is over 20 feet tall and has a large circumference of branches.  Avocado trees are a citrus, so try to get a citrus fertilizer.  If not, any good tree fertilizer should do.
