My sis is 9 yrs old and she has a speech about it. I'm helping her write it but I'm so lost. Here is what I have so far but I think it sounds boring and dumb! Can you help me rewrite it so its more interesting for 5th graders? I know this is asking for a lot but any ideas / suggestions / help would be so appreciated!! Thank you so much =)

Global Warming Speech

The Earth has warmed by about 1F over the past 100 years. But why? And how? Well, scientists are not exactly sure. The Earth could be getting warmer on its own, but many of the world's leading climate scientists think that things people do are helping to make the earth warmer.

Global warming is caused by greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases such as CO2, methane, nitrous oxide, water vapour and ozone trap heat around the earth. Without them, heat would be lost into space and we'd all freeze. The trapping of heat around the earth is called the greenhouse effect because glass in a greenhouse traps heat in a similar way, keeping the inside of the greenhouse warm. The main greenhouse gas responsible or global warming is carbon dioxide. When we burn fossil fuels such as oil when we drive cars or in power plants and factories this relesaes huge amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases are like a blanket - if they are the right thickness. The Earht won't be too hot or too cold. Many experts think the way we burn fuel and add chemicals to the atmosphere is causing the blanket to become thicker. This makes the earth hotter, an effect known as global warming.

Scientists expect the average earth temp to increase by 6F over the next 100 years. This might not sound like much but it could change the Earth's climate as never before. At the peak of the past ice age the temp was only 7F colder than today and glaciers covered much of the world!

So what might happen?

It is important to understand that scientists don't know for sure what climate change will bring. Some changes brought about by climate change will be good. If you live in a very cool climate, warmer temperatures might be welcome. Days and nights could be more comfortable and people in the area may be able to grow different and better crops than they could before. But it is also true that changes in some places will not be very good at all.

Global warming can make sea levels higher. Warmer weather makes the glaciers melt. Sea levels are expected to rise as much as 3ft in the next century. This could cause coastal flooding. Global warming also increases extreme weather such as tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and heat waves and droughts. Some animals and plants may go extinct because they can't cope with the increasing temperatures.

Global warming will drastically change the world as we know it.

But dont worry, its not all doom and gloom! You can make a difference.Climate change may be a big problem, but there are many little things we can do to make a difference. If we try, most of us can do our part to reduce the amount of green house gases that we put into the atmosphere.

Driving a car or using electricity is not wrong. We just have to be smart about it.Some people use less energy by carpooling. For example, four people can ride together in one car instead of driving four cars to work.

Whenever we use electricity, we help put greenhouse gases into the air. By turning off lights, the television, and the computer when you are through with them, you can help a lot.

Planting trees is fun and a great way to reduce greenhouse gases. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the air.

Thats all I have so far...I still have to write a conclusion but I don't know what to say..

  1. That's way too long for a fifth grader. You need something they could remember or something funny..

  2. well, you know what? the speech is veru inconsistent in what it's suppose to deliver. i  mean, there are words of uncertatinty of whether to believ or not to believe in global warming.

so, my suggestion would be to have a straight path of telling the message either to tell things on why we should be protecting our planet, what is global warming, what are the effects and then the solutions

    OR.

the other way around which i hope you won't do.

  3. You should make it shorter since they are 5th graders. Also you need to back up this statement with a reference to a scientific test that proves it. Since they are 5th graders keep it simple.

"The main greenhouse gas responsible or global warming is carbon dioxide."

Also you say many scientist agree but you never mention the opposing side. A non-biased paper always presents both sides. If this is an opinion piece then it doesn't matter.

    Good luck with paper!

  4. make it short and appeal to 5th graders , make it understanderbale to younger people , plus you still have the conclusion ?  girl I tell you, you need to shorten it.

  5. Great for 9 year olds.  A couple of very minor things -

1 - The sentence    "The trapping of heat around the earth is called the greenhouse effect because glass in a greenhouse traps heat in a similar way, keeping the..."        should probably read

"The trapping of heat around the earth is called the greenhouse effect because glass in a greenhouse traps heat, keeping the ..."    - dropping the phrase "in a similar way."       This is very picky of me.

The mechanisms are actually very different.  Greenhouses physical block the heat from rising and dispersing out into the open air. CO2 plays no role.  With global warming, CO2 is excited by long wave radiation from the earth and begins vibrating which adsorbs energy that can be redistributed throughout the atmosphere.  The more CO2 (or any greenhouse gas - but CO2 is one of the most efficient) the more energy that can be absorbed. We feel it redistributed as heat.  This is my simple understanding, but I would not try to get into this for 9 year olds.  Just drop the phrase.

2 - Tsunamis are not cause by weather - they are caused by earth quakes.  It is reaching way to far to link tsunamis to global warming. Drop it.

3 - For causes, you may want to add food and water shortages, more insect and disease outbreaks for humans and plants, more forest fires as plant die from drought, insect and disease outbreaks to the list.  These are some of the most worrisome consequences that can affect human welfare.

The rest is great!  It lists some simple common-sense things that can help and tells people it can be stopped (at least somewhat).

  6. Shrinking of the Sea surface Area will dsignificantly reduce Global Warming,

  7. There are a few errors in the speech:

    1) The IPCC's FAR predictions for temperature are along the lines of 1.1-6.4oC by the end of the century. That's 2-11.5oF. You might want to mention that scientists aren't really sure how much the world will warm but it could be as low as 2oF or as high as 11.5oF and some scientists think this could be even higher!

    2) The last glacial period was actually a bit colder than this, it's more like 9oC which is just over 16oF, but your point is still valid.

    3) The IPCC doesn't really expect the sea to rise that much. The FAR stated a range of 18cm-59cm which is about 7"-23". You might say, again scientists don't know exactly but they think the sea may rise but just over 1/2' or nearly 2'. You could maybe demonstrate how much this is by placing your hand 7" and then 2' off the floor to emulate flooding.

    4) Warmer conditions don't increase the chance of tsunamis. Also you should say "may increase the likelihood of floods..." as we don't know for sure.

    Things you could mention:

    1) The first bit is a tad garbled, just say "Greenhouse Gases such as CO2 trap...". Don't bother mentioning the others seeing as it's for 5th graders.

    2) About sea level rise you could talk about the possibility of some pacific islands being submerged in the future, perhaps with the aid of a photograph to hand round.

    3) I'm loath to suggest using polar bears as an example, but as it's for nine year olds that kind of thing is probably OK.

    4) When you say "many experts think when we burn...", that implies some don't. Seriously just say "When we burn fuels, we are adding more CO2 to the atmosphere which makes this blanket thicker and many scientists think this causes global warming." Or something.

    5) Maybe mention longer growing seasons and less harsh winters.

    6) You could finish with something like "So, yes, it's a big problem, but if we work together, you as an individual and us as a school [is it school?] and the whole world can solve this crisis once and for all. Thank you." Something like that.
