  1. El Salvador is composed of many ethnic backgrounds, including blacks from the US, Africa and the Caribbean, so don't worry you won't stick out like a sore thumb just because you are a Black American.

El Salvador is the only Central American country that has no visible African population because of its relative inaccessibility to the Atlantic slave trade. However, Salvadorans with African heritage are present, most notably in San Salvador, the capital.

You should keep in mind that you are visiting a foreign nation, and that the culture is a lot different than what you are used to. Dress modestly but not too extravagant. Flashy jewelry just screams out rich tourist.

Ultimately, if you treat people with respect and kindness, they will welcome you with open arms.

Best of luck on your trip. Sounds like you'll have a great time!

  2. I wouldnt worry about the colour of your skin. central america and the west indes have lots of countries that very dark skinned people live in. especially the islands like haiti and jamaica.

I think it should be amazing, I study spanish at college and Im so desperate to go but I dont have the money yet!

from my past travel experiences though, If your in a poor country or area, try not to flaunt your wealth too much. brand names and jewelry and stuff can make you a target more than normal. same with carrying cameras and cell phones.

consider the religion too, I believe El Salvador is mostly catholic, so it would be worth finding out how religious the country really is, and dress modestly. your not a girl so you dont really have to warned against miniskirts and tiny tops.

Also, people really appreciate any attempt to speak their language, so if you dont already, try and learn some basic spanish so at least you can greet people, introduce yourself that kind of thing. a lot of Latin american countries have a lot of animosity to you northern americans, but you can get around it by learning their customs and language because its a sign of respect.

apart from that you should be fine.

    have an amazing time!
