I am aware that a Citizen of the U.S. needs passports, but do Permanent Residents need passports do? Like for example, a Resident of the U.S. travels to Mexico by Car, when coming back, will she/he need to show some kind of Passport like a Citizen?

Also, is it necessary to show your passport when entering Mexico and then when coming back to the U.S.?

Finally, does the passport need to be a Mexican Passport, or a U.S. Passport?

  1. If you are a permanent resident of the United States, you CANNOT have a U.S. passport.  Only U.S. citizens may have a U.S. passport.  If Mexico is your home country, you are still a Mexican citizen, and you must use a MEXICAN passport to travel internationally.  As a permanent resident of the U.S. you had to have had a Mexican passport when you came to the U.S. Do you still have it or did it expire?  If you do not have a current Mexican passport, you need to go to the nearest Mexican consulate and apply for one.  Now...You MUST have a passport to FLY to Mexico or any other country..does not matter what country you are a citizen of...same for everyone.  You do not need a passport to travel to and from Mexico by Land or SEA until after SUMMER 2008.  See 1st website below and read the top half of the page for the CURRENT info.  So. for NOW, you may drive to and from the U.S.  and Mexico without a passport, but in a few months this will change.  You must have your green card with you and it must not be expired. You should also have another form of picture I.D. like a drivers license. See second website for list of Mexican consulates in the U.S.
