1. A thunderstorm is a rain shower during which you hear thunder. Since thunder comes from lightning, all thunderstorms have lightning

When you see lightning, count the time until you hear thunder. If this time is 30 seconds or less, go to a safer place. If you can't see the lightning, just hearing the thunder is a good back up rule to use to take cover.

  2. Good question.

Every t-storm does contain lightning and thunder.

Sometime you cannot see it as the lightning is too far away to see, but you can still hear the thunder.

In addition, some lightning is from cloud to ground and some is cloud to cloud. In the daytime, sometimes I cannot see cloud to cloud lightning, while at night it can create the effect of almost non-stop strikes. The inverse can be true with cloud to ground.

So, in short, if you can hear thunder there is lightning out there, but it may be hard to see. Enjoy the storm!

  3. Just remember though, you may not always be able to hear the thunder. Atmospheric conditions may cause the thunder from intercloud strikes from ever reaching the ground. Also, counting is relatively useless. Lighting can strike up to 10 miles from the parent thuderstorm. If you can see lightning, or hear thunder, the safest place is inside.
