  1. Why would you want to?  I did a lot of breaking from the late 1960's until I suddenly realized, (in the mid 1970's), that it had nothing to do with the ability to defend yourself.  Besides you just risk serious injury. Been there done that won't do it any more!

  2. You should know that breaking ability has nothing to do with fighting or self defense. It is at times, a good motivator for students but the dangers often far out weight the benefits. If you must break at your school do only what you have to and nothing more. Body parts need to be conditioned for breaking but conditioning is another whole question and answer in itself.

I did breaking for years and in the end I realized that there is no way to apply this semi-useless skill to real life. Hard, conditioned hands are more effective at strikes than average hands but there is always a cost to your body. You may pay a high price in your later years, like arthritis...

There are also a lot of frauds out in the world who use tricks to do seemly amazing feats of "breaking" These people should try being magicians instead of martial artist.

Master Brian Grey has great information if you really want to explore breaking with an authentic practitioner.

  3. Yes, my family has been practicing Pencak Silat for many generations. I finally got up to that point two years ago. Believe me, if you don't know what your doing you could get seriously hurt. So if you don't think your ready for it their is no shame is backing out. You can always try again.

    Good Luck!

  4. Yes, that's why they invented the sledgehammer.

  5. I can help you with that and it won't take you 10 yrs at all.

If you want I could throw you through a wall. Always happy to help.

  6. If you can break a board, then you can break a brick the power needed to break a brick isn't that much more then you need to break a board.

Breaking bricks is more of a mind thing then a strength thing. All you need to do is focus and go for it. If you slow down because you think it will hurt, it won't break.

I break bricks for demos. Three bricks each hand at the same time.

  7. It's not strength. it's technique! Here's my 12 year old son breaking a brick for his Tae Kwon Do, Brown Belt test.
