mono/herpes connection

that's so weird that someone else has posted about this! i caught genital herpes about a year ago and a week after my first outbreak i had a sore throat that overnight turned into the most excruciating tonsillitis (and a subsequent 2 weeks of h**l--couldn't speak let alone swallow anything most of the time) and it was then that i tested positive for mono as well. since i only kissed one person that summer (we dated for 2 months) i'm assuming the same guy gave me both herpes and mono.
i asked my doctor about this and she said it was possible that since mono has a one month incubation period, i probably caught mono first from this guy (and had no symptoms for a while) and that weakened my immune system enough to catch herpes. it was especially upsetting for me since we only had s*x once and used a condom.
i wonder if since both viruses are in the herpes family (a family that includes chicken pox as well) that could explain a connection?
