We had to put quite a lot of rosin on the horsehair to get it to make a sound, we got our daughter one for Christmas and we are new to the violin, but the internet sources stated that when the bow is first rosined (sp?) it takes quite a lot. Sure enough after running the rosin up and down the bow numerous times the violin strings did start to give out sound! Not enough rosin no sound to much white dust on your violin. Hope this helps.
