  1. On the ''Rich list'' last night, AFL was listed as the no 17 top sports played in Australia out of top 20 so its not as popular as most of us think ???

  2. i think its really hard to put a number to it,but when you consider that Victoria, sth Aust,N.T,W.A,tasmania are all AFL states with only Queensland and N.S.W true rugby states but who also have a big AFL following these days (going by the crowds they pull) and that the average attendance at an AFL game it just under 36,000 the highest of any spectator sport in Australia it would have to be a fair percentage of the Aussie population compared to other sports in this country.

  3. 17.103%

  4. While many people will follow the fortunes of an AFL team, there are State leagues in Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, Western Australia that have a strong following and local leagues throughout those States as well as southern NSW, the ACT and the NT. There are local leagues in Sydney and Brisbane as well.  Many South Australians, for instance,  are one eyed supportes of the SANFL but might have a cheer for Adelaide or Port or another AFL team without following the league closely.

  5. AFL most popular sport in Australia

Fifty-eight percent of Australians follow a sporting team and of those nearly half follow an AFL team.

The June Sensis® Consumer Report - which explores attitudes to a wide range of issues including sport, finances and business ownership - found that 30 per cent of Australians follow an AFL team.

"Sixty-six per cent of South Australians follow a sporting team, while 57 per cent barrack for an AFL team," Ms Singh said.

"In Victoria, 61 per cent of people support a team and 56 per cent follow an AFL team," she noted.

The second most popular sport in Australia is rugby league (15 per cent), followed by rugby union (4 per cent) and soccer and cricket (2 per cent each).

This is surprising to me that only about 29% of Australians follow an AFL team but I guess when AFL is based in Victoria and Sydney and Brisbane are mad NRL supporters it does make our sport seem smaller then it really is.

  6. I agree with Forky about attendances. I would say that around 70% of Australians follow AFL.

  7. I would say about 60%.

  8. Lots. It's part of the Australian culture. I say about 75-80%

  9. lots, more than NRL by far

  10. dont know a percentage though it is the main sport in nt, w.a, south australia, victoria, tasmania, probably 35 to 40 percent in qld....depending on how well the lions play.........and sydney would be the lowest so u would have to say pretty d**n high.....maybe 65 to 70 percent concidering that nsw....is the most populated state
