They need seed and pellets, and they also need people food too. Proteins, grains, fruits, veggies, etc. I'm not sure how much of what...but you can easily find the answers online, in books at the library, or in books/leaflets at your local pet store or book store (yes, I'm the person who stands around reading the books at the store then not buying them).
Outside of cage time ideas: a play gym is fantastic, or just putting food/water/toys on top of the cage is good too. I'm going to make a bird tree for mine tomorrow. I'm gunna get a big branchy branch (you know, one with lots of other branches on it) and I'm going to "plant" it in a big thing of dirt, then cover the dirt with bird gravel. It'll be a Parakeet Tree and they can climb all over it and chew it up. I'm super excited for this project (dorky, I know). lol
Millet spray is pretty fattening, so I hear. The Petco guy told me that they need it ALWAYS to be in their cage, but everywhere else I read says only sometimes as a treat...it's like cookies and cake is to us apparently. You can also find more about it online easily.
Hope that helped!
