On the other hand, he makes the reader infer that positive or successful people are less likely to focus on price, and instead think about future possibilities and values within things.

A cynic is a person that doesn't see the positve, just negative or as they are. So the quote is saying how the "man" knows everything however doesn't see the importance, the value of it; he doesn't bother to experience what he considers unimporant or motivated by self indulengence, to him it holds no merit.

A cynic would be someone who only sees the financial cost of owning a dog.  A cynic would not be able to see the overall value a dog brings to the life of the person who has him as a pet.

A cynic would see the only the monetary cost of a doll.  A cynic would not be able to see the value of the doll, that it brings a smile to a child's face or a look of utter excitement to the child's eye and warmth to the givers heart.
