  1. Oscar Wilde is saying that if you focus on what things cost, as opposed to what they can do for you, you end up becoming bitter and negative (in other words, you'll be a cynic) and won't make the most of your situation.

On the other hand, he makes the reader infer that positive or successful people are less likely to focus on price, and instead think about future possibilities and values within things.

  2. A cynic is a person that doesn't see the positve, just negative or as they are. So the quote is saying how the "man" knows everything however doesn't see the importance, the value of it; he doesn't bother to experience what he considers unimporant or motivated by self indulengence, to him it holds no merit.

    Cynic:

    1. A person who believes all people are motivated by selfishness.

    2. A person whose outlook is scornfully and often habitually negative.

    3. Cynic A member of a sect of ancient Greek philosophers who believed virtue to be the only good and self-control to be the only means of achieving virtue.

  3. A cynic would be someone who only sees the financial cost of owning a dog.  A cynic would not be able to see the overall value a dog brings to the life of the person who has him as a pet.

A cynic would see the only the monetary cost of a doll.  A cynic would not be able to see the value of the doll, that it brings a smile to a child's face or a look of utter excitement to the child's eye and warmth to the givers heart.

  4. hes saying a cynic complains about things that he doesnt realize how lucky he is to have or experience or have the right or privelledge TO experience=get it?An example would be if some one complained about the country making him register for something in order to recieve something. When in reality he aught to think about the sacrifices that were made to provide and maintain a country that has such things to offer for free (with only having to sign up for)
