Question:

"African" Names?

I was curious why do you tend to see black people giving their children "African" names like Queefa, Shaqauqua, Trashita, Crayaun, Takeisha, Nakalakareika, etc.?

I was also curious what the status of these names were among the larger black community? Do these "African" names belong to only a minority of the population? Are the people who have those names looked down upon? Don't these parents realize that the hideous name they give their kid will be on the top of every resume/job application they ever send in? Don't they realize no respectable employer is going to hire their kid so they can answer the phone and say, "Hello, thanks for calling Business X, this is 'Vaginita' how can I help you?"

As silly as this question is, as a white person I don't know much about this black subculture, and my one black friend from HS is about as "white" as you can get; he was no help in the matter.

  1. THEY ARE THEIR KIDS AND THEY CAN NAME THEM WHATEVER THEY WANT. IT SEEMS RIDICULOUS TO WHITES BUT NOT TO THE BLACK PEOPLE.

  2. must be nice to be a racist

  3. Every race/culture has different types of names.

There are white names, black names, Hispanic names, Asian names, Indian names, religious names, I could go on and on.

What is strange to you, might not be strange to somebody else. And honestly, I would not want to work in a place that judged me solely by my name and not by my skills.

Besides, African names are not the same thing as "ghetto" names. A lot of black people don't like those names either.

People of different races are not going to stop giving their kids these "hideous names," (as you phrased it), just because people like you think its different.

  4. even tho people move for whatever reason it is they dont like to forget where they come from. they still have their religion and family practices, and that is what this country was founded on the freedom to come here and still be you, as long as it doesnt infringe on anyone elses rights.

  5. wow.

  6. I'm  not African but possibly they have  a tradition that is none of my business

  7. Yes, we knew you were white. It's your disdainful, racist tone.

Since you're trying to learn better, here: http://www.baby-guide.com/black-baby-nam... a list of traditional names and their translations.

Finally, the kid always has the option of legally changing his or her name if they think it will be a legal problem, although some have not. (I don't know if you've heard of, oh, Barack Obama.)

  8. You sir have been complete mislead. Your friend was no help because he didn't know how to tell you how stupid you sound. Where did you get the idea that those were African names? Did you even bother to look up the meanings?  As for the ridiculous names you mentioned. Yes it is sad that people name their children crazy names, but it is their right. I am not complaining about the white girl named Rain and Sky and other c**p like that. To each their own.  But I say take some time and educate yourself. Not every black person names their children with names like that.

  9. Those aren't "african" names. I would know bc i'm a african female and my name isn't nearly ridiculous as those names or ridiculous at all. Those are ghetto, bizarre crazy names. Some people like them but they need to get a name that won't affect their future.
