"Alex Gordon is a great find for Kansas City Royals," Dayton Moore – MLB News
Kansas City Royals’ General Manager Dayton Moore believes that Alex Gordon is a great find for the club. The left handed striker has produced some magical performances since becoming a permanent part of the Royal’s roster. However, it was not until the end of 2011 when he played to his maximum capability.
Gordon’s hit 2.99 in 2011, which was his career best average. His ability to perform under pressure is what makes him one of the most special players in American League. Not only is he strong and tough, he also has the athleticism to get to difficult balls in left-field. Thanks to his incredible pace and speed, the left-fielder won his first ever Golden Glove Award last season.
It was a remarkable achievement considering the fact he was demoted to Minor League system in 2010. Having improved his game play significantly since the start of Major League Baseball career, he is one of the most determined players in the League. For his consistent performances, the Royals offered him a one-year $4.45 million contract on Thursday, which he accepted generously.
"I think a lot of people are going to see what a lot of people are talking about with our young players," Gordon said. "They made an impact once they came up."
"We felt we could have done it last year, and we had the players and the talent," Gordon said. "And I think Dayton has done a great job of going out there this year and, maybe, filling some holes. We felt like that last year and we feel better this year -- having the same guys back, hopefully the same chemistry.”
According to sources, the left-fielder had asked for $5.45 million for one-year but the Royals countered him with $4.15 million. Both Parties finally announced that they have reached an agreement on $4.45 million for one year. However, Gordon wants to have a longer contract with the club he likes the most. In an interview, he stated that he is hopeful to secure a long term contract with Royals.
By signing a long term contract with Royals, Gordon will have an excellent opportunity to play his natural game with freedom. If he can maintain his impressive form during Spring Training, GM Moore might decide to upgrade his contract sooner than later.
