I've lost both.  I lost my bank balance when my marriage collapsed, and I found that I no longer owned a house; but had been allowed to keep all the debts.  At he same time I suffered a mental collapse - and ended up on a cliff at mignight (and I wasn't there for the view).  Some nice people recued me, and I spent the next few week in a mental institution.  I have since been released; but I'm still unstable, and have to take (on doctor's orders) a numer of personality-altering drugs evey day, just to hold my mind together.  It works up to a point; but there are still days when I want to pull the duvet over my head and pretend that the world does not exist.  One day, I KNOW I will commit suicide.  It probably won't be tomorrow - but sooner or later my daemons will be too strong for me....

Give me a choice between a healthy bank balance and a fully-functioning mind at ease with itself - which do you think I'd pick?

Do you mean is the bank balance better than the mental balance that you have in your head of your account?  If so, then yes!  Mentally we have a lot on ours minds and we don't typically remember everything that we have done when it comes to debit cards, atm cards, and checks.  The bank has to keep an accurate record of you account, and money can not just "disappear" from your account.  It has to be accounted for at all times through a paper trail of some sort.

You have not given us the position you are going to take.

Personally, it's a no-brainer for me. Mental balance wins out any time.

If you have money and no common sense, you'll soon loose it. Remember  "A fool and his money are soon parted." ?

If you have mental balance, you will be able to live happily with whatever money you have.
