Question:

"Best" free chess programs?

I'm still not much better than a beginner at chess, and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a free downloadable PC chess program that does a good job with training. The chess engine doesn't need to be the most powerful; as long as it's better than an intermediate human player, that should work.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I don't know if they have good tutorials, but for free chess software you often need an interface.

    Winboard comes with Gnuchess.

  2. Internet Chess Club has some downloadable software that plays a good game of chess.  You can also play people from all over the world on that site.  www.itsyourturn.com also is a good place to play other people.

  3. Chessmaster 10th edition. It cost money though....but its a great trainer.

  4. Try this one ...

free online chess game (no downloads).

  5. Winboard (XBoard for Unix systems) is probably the best freeware program online.  You can pick it up at http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html

HOWEVER, if you're not interested in it...  you can check out Source Forge ( http://www.sourceforge.net ) for other free chess programs that suit your needs.
