I am getting ready to build a wooden wraparound deck onto my house. I am framing off my already existing block foundation wall and the cells on this wall have been poured solid during construction. What type of fastener do you reccommend using to attach my framing 2x8 board to this block wall ? Also I have no axcess to the backside of the block wall.

  1. use an expanding bolt , drill the concrete plenty deep enough, and fill any rough spots with mortar when you bolt her up

  2. You can use expansion bolts (stainless steel) if you want, they are pretty easy to install. Or you can use and epoxy anchoring system. With both, you'll have to drill a hole in the block/concrete (filled cells) to get the correct anchorage. If you do the epoxy, you will need to drill all the holes, then set the anchors in the epoxy at the same time. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of money on epoxy cartridges.

  3. You'll need masonry bolts that will go into the matching-sized two-step expansion anchors which will fit into the mortar gaps in the brick.

You'll drill holes (with a masonry bit) into the mortar where the holes line up. Drill coordinating holes in (studs/2x4s) whatever you're using to attach the two. Ratchet down as hard as you can go.

Note:Buy a few masonry bits and keep them wet with a little water during the drilling process. You'll go through the bits pretty quickly.

  4. It's not that difficult.  Drill some holes in the masonry & attach your 2x8 to the wall.  Be certain to use strong, secure lag bolts, that  expand in the drilled hole.

  5. use expansion bolts....drill holes in the foundation and hammer in the bolts.....hang one floor joist off of the bolts...add washer and nut....as u tighten the bolt it expanses in the hole.....be sure to add your flashing first

  6. There are going to be expansion bolts specifically for block walls, which the guy at your hardware store will be able to show you.  You will probably use joist hangars too.

Be sure you have building permits for the deck, which are required in most areas.
