I have a '95 Tercel. Doesn't the lamp usually just mean some minor problem? I'm thinking of just ignoring it until its next smog check.

Good idea?

  1. check engine lite is a warning. get it checked before comes a bigger problem.

  2. Go to auto parts store..they will check it for free. There computer will show you a code on it saying what is wrong.

  3. If the light is on at smog check you automatically FAIL. Auto Zone will scan your codes and tell you the problem

  4. Something has failed to cause the light to come on.  If, however, the car runs fine and the fuel economy has NOT decreased, you will probably not do any damage by driving it that way.

  5. Well here are some common check engine issues. O2 sensor, Miss fire (you need plugs and wires) bad water temp sensor, bad MAF sensor. may auto part stores will pull the codes for free and let you know what the code is and assist in getting you the right part. my guess would be the O2 or tune up.
