Question:

"Cloze the gap" assessments to assess vocabulary?

When I taught 4th and 5th graders, I created assessments of this type each week for 7-10 vocabulary words. They had to get the word from a word bank and place it in the correct sentence. The kids LOVED doing them. Many would do particularly well. My kids have LD also. Why did they love these vocabulary tests so much? I'm not complaining though....:-)

Do you have success with this form of assessment?

Also, does this work well for 2nd graders?

  2. Yes!  This is a great activity that works well for 2nd graders too.  My third graders love it.  It is great for vocabulary, and I also use it to help them start to see how they can use it as a helpful reading strategy in general.

I actually do it on my activboard and put clouds over the "missing" words or grass or some other fun picture that goes with the theme, and then we write our word guess right over it.  After we've finished the whole activity, we magically erase the clouds and see if we were right!
