Question:

"Corrupt user profile" Windows XP?

I'll try to make this as detailed as possible...

* I received a "corrupt user profile" error on Windows XP

* Found the solution here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

* I'm fine until I get to step 6 of the last section. I try to copy and paste the files to the new profile and it won't let me copy. The only way around it is if I make each folder and sub-folder non-read-only....

* That's where the pain begins...although windows gives me the option to just make that folder non-read only or that folder AND it's sub-folders non-read only, it doesn't "stick", so I have to set the read-only property of each folder (including sub-folders) off in order to copy it.

Is there an easier way to do this or will I have to keep doing it this way? My friend told me that I should just run "chkdsk", but if the profile is corrupt, I really don't want to keep it.

  1. Well you have already done what was required.. So either you keep on with the uncheck each folder option OR you get a live CD, ubuntu/kubuntu/knoppix etc (A Live CD loads to RAM, not the HDD so you get to see what the OS Linux is like & if everything\device works OK. You do have access to your HDD & folder, including copying across profiles etc.

I'd say get a live CD, you never know when it might come in handy.

OR there is another method. try ths program: http://www.download.com/Unlocker/3000-22...

Itll unlatch any active strings so you can copy the data to anywhere you want.

Once installed rt click on whatever you want to copy choose unlocker, It'll allow you to choose to copy/delete the contents..
