"Cottage cheese ceilings"--are they dangerous?

The stuff covering my apartment ceiling. I heard it compared to asbestos, but that would be bad since millions of people have their apartments covered with that stuff.

  1. I think it's older homes that have asbestos in popcorn ceilings. I wouldn't worry about it.

In the UK we call these types of ceilings 'Artex' and prior to 1984 they did contain asbestos.  After that date they did not.  If you are trying to remove an old one check when it was put there (when the apartment was built?).  These textured ceilings have gone out of fashion in UK now but doubtless they will come back in as soon as everybody had flat ceilings.

  4. No they are not made of material similar to asbestos, it only looks that way.  A lot of people don't like that look, but I think it looks great especially on ceilings with any kind of flaws. It also deadens the sound reflections when listening to music throughout the house.
